Description

This presentation identifies current screening recommendations for the diagnosis of syphilis in pregnancy. It describes the recommended management of syphilis in pregnancy, and outlines an approach to evaluate and manage a neonate with possible congenital syphilis.

Marguerite A. Urban,MD

Marguerite A. Urban, MD is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Medical Director of the Monroe County Sexual Health Clinic and the University of Rochester Center for Community Practice. She is the Principal Investigator for the NYS AIDS Institute Clinical Education Initiative – Sexual Health Center of Excellence and the NYS Congenital Syphilis Prevention Project. Her research interests relate to sexual behavior, sexual risk reduction, HIV and STI prevention and sexual health.

Daniela E. Dimarco,MD, MPH

Daniela DiMarco, MD is an infectious disease physician and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center providing clinical care within the URMC system and the Monroe County Sexual Health Clinic. She obtained her Medical Degree from SUNY Stony Brook, internal medicine residency training at the University of Connecticut, ID fellowship at the University of Vermont, and Master’s in Public Health from Dartmouth College. Dr. DiMarco’s work is focused on STIs including HIV. She leads the CDC-funded North East Track 2B Capacity Building Assistance Program for HIV Prevention at the University of Rochester Center for Community Practice, and is faculty within the NYS AIDS Institute Clinical Education Initiative Sexual Health Center of Excellence. She participates in clinical research as part of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium, and serves on related expert working groups.

Geoffrey A. Weinberg, MD,
Geoffrey A. Weinberg is Board-Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases and his practice includes all areas of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, with special emphasis on Pediatric HIV/AIDS medicine, clinical immunology, immunization, laboratory medicine, and assessment of recurrent infections and fevers of unknown cause (including pediatric travel medicine/tropical medicine). His current research, funded by Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (New Vaccine Surveillance Network), is focused on the integration of vaccine-preventable enteric and respiratory disease epidemiologic and laboratory surveillance with a goal towards the improvement of vaccine delivery and efficacy Past work has included clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals, biologics, and vaccines in children and pregnant women infected with HIV (International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent Clinical Trials Network, funded by NIH/NICHD contract) Additional research interests include definition of the role of iron in infection, particularly with regards to HIV infection and Pneumocystis carinii infection, vaccine biology, and infectious diseases epidemiology. He is currently Chair of the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute Committee for the Care of Children & Adolescents with HIV Infection; Co-Chair of the DHHS/NIH/OARAC Panel on Pediatric Antiretroviral Therapy and Management Guidelines; and a member of the DHHS/NIH/OARAC Panel on Antiretroviral Therapy and Management of Pregnant Women & Interventions to Reduce Perinatal HIV Transmission Guidelines.
