Description

Medical cannabis use is common in the United States and increasingly more socially acceptable. As more patients seek out and acquire medical cannabis, medical providers will be faced with a growing number of patients seeking information on the indications, efficacy, and safety of medical cannabis. This course will review how the historical and cultural context of cannabis regulation in the United States has impacted current policy and practice patterns, discuss the risks and benefits of using medical cannabis, as well as describe harm reduction principles to patients who us cannabis in clinical practice. This course will also review the pharmacology of medical cannabis.

Deepika Slawek,MD, MS, MPH

Deepika Slawek, MD, MPH, MS is Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Slawek is board certified in infectious diseases and Internal Medicine and provides HIV/AIDS care, Hepatitis C treatment, as well as general medicine careat Montefiore Medical Center where she also helps to lead the Montefiore Medical Cannabis Program. Dr. Slawek’s research focuses on improving outcomes in people living with HIV(PLWH). She is currently studying how medical cannabis affects pain in PLWH.Dr. Slawek is the recipient of a K23 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to test how different formulations of medical cannabis affect pain and inflammation in PLWH in an innovative quasi-experimental study.

Dr. Slawek completed her Infectious Diseases Fellowship at New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center and received a Master’s in Clinical Research Methods through the Clinical Research Training Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
