Giovanni Guaraldi, MD is an Associate Professor of Infectious disease at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). In 2000 he started a liver and kidney transplant program for people with HIV infection at the multi-visceral transplant center at Policlinico of Modena. Since 2002 he runs a Metabolic Clinic for HIV infection. This tertiary level referral center offers a multidisciplinary team consultant service were more than 4500 people have been followed up. He is a panel member of the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) guidelines on prevention and management of HIV associated co-morbidities. Dr. Guaraldi has published widely (over 450 papers) on various clinical aspects of HIV and COVID-19 treatment and care.

Learning Objectives

  • Be introduced to the principles of HIV geriatric medicine and understand that healthy aging is the ultimate goal of HIV management.
  • Learn how to assess biological age with frailty and recognize the changing clinical pattern of people aging with HIV versus people who acquired HIV at an older age.
  • Appreciate, in the context of COVID pandemic, different models of HIV care in older adults, in PLWH experiencing frailty transition and in elderly frail individuals.
  • Understand antiretroviral therapy management within the framework of polypharmacy deprescribing strategies.
