Description

This activity will describe recent trends in antibiotic resistant gonorrhea reports. It will characterize epidemiologic characteristics associated with disseminated gonococcal infections reported in recent literature, and will outline management strategies for neonates with a birth parent with syphilis. It will also identify three GI pathogens that may be associated with sexual transmission, and will describe possible uses of doxycycline as prophylaxis for STIs.

Geoffrey A. Weinberg is Board-Certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases and his practice includes all areas of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, with special emphasis on Pediatric HIV/AIDS medicine, clinical immunology, immunization, laboratory medicine, and assessment of recurrent infections and fevers of unknown cause (including pediatric travel medicine/tropical medicine). His current research, funded by Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (New Vaccine Surveillance Network), is focused on the integration of vaccine-preventable enteric and respiratory disease epidemiologic and laboratory surveillance with a goal towards the improvement of vaccine delivery and efficacy Past work has included clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals, biologics, and vaccines in children and pregnant women infected with HIV (International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent Clinical Trials Network, funded by NIH/NICHD contract) Additional research interests include definition of the role of iron in infection, particularly with regards to HIV infection and Pneumocystis carinii infection, vaccine biology, and infectious diseases epidemiology. He is currently Chair of the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute Committee for the Care of Children & Adolescents with HIV Infection; Co-Chair of the DHHS/NIH/OARAC Panel on Pediatric Antiretroviral Therapy and Management Guidelines; and a member of the DHHS/NIH/OARAC Panel on Antiretroviral Therapy and Management of Pregnant Women & Interventions to Reduce Perinatal HIV Transmission Guidelines.
