Benjamin Eckhardt, MD received his MD degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Internal Medicine training at NYU within the Primary Care Program. After completing residency, he worked in Rwanda for Partners In Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima with a clinical appointment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He returned to New York to complete his fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Weill Cornell Medical College while concurrently receiving a MS in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research. He joined the faculty at NYU/Bellevue in 2016 with a clinical focus in HIV and outpatient infectious diseases management. Dr. Eckhardt’s research interest focuses on reducing the infectious disease-related harm associated with substance use disorder. Specifically, with a concentration on improving the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases like HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV), and severe bacterial infections such as endocarditis and osteomyelitis. His work attempts to enhance care delivery for individuals affected by substance use disorder by developing strategies that address both their infectious disease needs and the broader challenges they face in accessing healthcare. Since 2014, much of his has been partnering with harm reduction organizations to co-locating low-threshold medical care within syringe service programs. More recently, since 2024, Dr. Eckhardt has been providing care through a street medicine model in partnership with NYC Health+Hospital’s Street Health Outreach and Wellness (SHOW) program.
