Description

This course aims to increase clinicians’ knowledge of managing co-morbidities in their patients living with HIV. It will primarily cover common co-morbidities like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and periodontal disease. The presenter will discuss epidemiology, risk factors, and best clinical practices.

Joseph P. McGowan,MD, FACP

Joe McGowan, MD is a Professor of Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, is Medical Director of the HIV Service Line Program at Northwell Health, and is board certified in Infectious Diseases and credentialed as an HIV Specialist by the AAHIVM. He received a BA degree from Columbia University (summa cum laude), MD from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and has completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and an NIH Fellowship in Immunology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. McGowan has published over 80 original articles and abstracts dealing with HIV and AIDS.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the changing epidemiology for HIV disease in relation to age-related trends in cardiovascular disease.
  • Explain the risk factors for CVD unique to the HIV population as well as those similar to non-HIV status.
  • Identify the reasons, including weight gain, why HIV-infected individuals are at particular risk for type 2 diabetes.
  • Recognize Oral Considerations in the Management of HIV.
