Description

This course is designed to change the learners’ competency and performance of pre-conception and perinatal care for persons living with HIV. The course will update the audience about the Federal Perinatal HIV Guidelines. It will also discuss strategies for mitigating adverse outcomes of social, racial, and gender inequalities on birthing patients’ health. Providers will leave with the ability to support their patients in preventing perinatal transmission.

Rodney L. Wright, MD, MSc, is Vice Chair of Obstetrics and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Wright’s clinical interests include HIV during pregnancy, infectious diseases, sexually

transmitted infections, global women’s health and maternal fetal medicine. An active member within the community, Dr. Wright is a member of the New York State AIDS Advisory Council and was a member of the New York State Taskforce on Maternal Mortality and

Disparate Racial Outcomes. In 2019, he was awarded the Bronx County Medical Society “Peer to Peer” Excellence in Medicine Award and in 2023 was named one of this country’s top Black Physicians by Castle and Connolly. He is also a NY “Top Doctor” by Castle and Connolly for 2023 and 2024. Dr. Wright received the New York State Commissioner of Health Commissioner’s Special Recognition Award in recognition of his work as co-chair of the New York State Perinatal HIV Guidelines Committee and service to the New York State Ending the Epidemic (AIDS) Task Force.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the racial, ethnic, and gender disparities that exist with regards to incidence and prevalence of HIV.
  • Explain options for safe conception in couples with different HIV statuses, including the use of PrEP.
  • Define best practices in obstetric care for pregnant people living with HIV.
  • Describe key steps to reduce the risk of perinatal HIV transmission.
