Sexual Health Center of Excellence Preceptorships

What does the preceptorship training include?

The SH COE offer 2 types of preceptorships for clinicians: a single session focused on sexual history and physical examination skills and a multi-session comprehensive STI preceptorship. During the pandemic, both types have been adapted to a virtual learning environment.

 

I. Sexual History and Physical Examination Skills Building Preceptorship

a. In-Person*

A 6 hour CE (CME/CNE)** accredited small group experience facilitated by experienced sexual health clinicians featuring:

  • Didactic instruction regarding the role of sexual history in sexual health care, and key components involved in the accurate diagnosis, management & prevention of STIs (1.5 hours)
  • Skills building practice for obtaining sexual histories and behavioral risk assessments with cultural competency using real world patient simulations (inclusive of LGBTQ+ persons)
  • Use of high definition mannequins for skills training in physical examination techniques and specimen collection including genital, pharyngeal and rectal specimens (2.5 hours)
  • Available to be offered on location at clinical practice sites throughout New York State or onsite at the CEI Sexual Health Center of Excellence office in Rochester, NY
  • *In person - not available during COVID-19 pandemic (see virtual option)

    b. Virtual

    A 3 hour CE (CME/CNE)** accredited small group experience offered via the Zoom platform by experienced sexual health clinicians featuring didactic and small group discussion focused on:

  • Impact of stigma on health care interactions related to sexual health
  • Review of methods to obtain sexual history with cultural competency
  • Role play with sexual history taking in breakout rooms using real world patient simulations
  • Components of sexual health genital exam
  • Demonstration of sexual health genital exam using high definition simulation models
  • Specimen collection didactic/demonstration

    II. Comprehensive STI Preceptorship

    a. In-Person*: “STI Intensive”

    Comprehensive STI clinical on-site training with flexible scheduling of one, two or three sessions in a high-volume health department STI clinic in Rochester, NY. Each 6 to 8 hour session provides skills training working with a clinical preceptor providing STI/HIV screening and diagnostic care in a public health STI clinic. This clinical experience may be paired with 5 hour didactic session(s) taught by sexual health content experts offered onsite for CE (CME/CNE/CNERx)** credit. Content includes:

  • Sexual history/behavioral risk assessment
  • Selective STI/HIV screening examination for special populations
  • Differential diagnosis and clinical management of bacterial and viral STIs
  • Selection of STI/HIV tests, including screening tests for various populations
  • Specimen collection for STI/HIV tests
  • Interpretation of STI/HIV test results
  • STI treatments according to CDC STI Treatment Guidelines
  • Brief behavioral intervention for STI/HIV risk reduction
  • *In person - not available during COVID-19 pandemic (see virtual option)

    b. Virtual: “STI Boot Camp Series”

    A CE accredited (CME/CNE/CNERx)** progressive learning series offered via the Zoom platform by experienced sexual health clinicians to improve clinical skills related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of STIs. Content will incorporate up to date clinical guidelines related to STI management. The series is offered in 3 parts (3 hours for each session). Parts 1 and 2 will include didactic sessions and real-world case presentations with active discussion regarding presentation and management. Part 3 will also involve break-out sessions allowing individual one-one mentor/trainee interactions utilizing simulated patient scenarios targeted to the individual participants’ clinical role.

    STI Bootcamp 1:

  • Current epidemiology and screening recommendations of reportable STIs
  • Diagnosis, typical presentation and management of:
  • Gonorrhea, Chlamydial infections
  • Syphilis
  • Herpes simplex infection
  • Vaginitis
  •  

    STI Bootcamp 2:

  • Partner management for curable sexually transmitted infections
  • Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) in New York State
  • Complications of mucosal STIs including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), epididymitis, and disseminated gonococcal infections
  • Diagnosis and management of emerging STIs including Lymphogranuloma venereum and Mycoplasma genitalium
  • Complications of syphilis, including manifestations and treatment neurosyphilis
  • Specimen collection didactic/demonstration
  •  

    STI Bootcamp 3:

  • PrEP/PEP as part of sexual healthcare
  • Break-out sessions with one-on-one mentee/trainee case simulations covering a variety of STI scenarios

    NYS clinical professionals (MDs, NPs, RNs, PAs, DOs)
